D’Tigers shock USA in pre-Olympics basketball friendly

Nigeria shocked their USA counterparts 90-87 in a pre-Olympic basketball friendly on Saturday night.

The game was played in Las Vegas, Nevada.

D’Tiger, with six NBA players and head coach Mike Brown in charge, became the first African nation to beat the Americans.

It is the first of five tune-up games for USA before the Olympics in Tokyo.

They were without three players still active in the NBA Finals.

Brooklyn Nets star Kevin Durant led the Americans with 17 points.

Nigeria was led by Gabe Vincent with 21 points.

“I’m kind of glad it happened,” USA head coach Gregg Popovich said.

Popovich noted that the Nigerians have been training together since June, while his side was assembled just four days earlier.

He added that the defeat should be seen as a learning experience and not “the end of the world.”
