Nigeria Navy rank, symbols and Salary structure 2021 update

The Nigeria Navy is considered the strongest in West Africa, and also one of the strongest in Africa as a whole with substantial human resources and are well equipped.

They work alongside other international allies to protect the Gulf of Guinea from maritime criminal activities, including kidnapping, oil thefts, piracy, marine ecological protection, subsurface warfare, espionage, and territorial violation.

The history of the Nigeria Navy dates back as far as 1914 when it was known as the Nigerian Marine; it later became the Nigerian Naval Force.

However, in 1959, the Queen of England, Queen Elizabeth II permitted Nigeria to use the title ‘Royal Nigerian Navy’; it was later changed to the Nigerian Navy in 1963 the country became a Republic.

Since then it has grown by leap and bound.

Nigerian Navy ranks

Ranks in the Nigerian Navy is divided into two distinct cadre and they are;

1. Commissioned Officers
2. Non-commissioned Officers

Commission Officers

They are officers who came into the Navy through the Nigerian Defense Academy or the Direct Short Service Commission. In most cases, they are university graduates with a degree in any recognised course. They earn more salaries than those of the Non-commissioned cadre and are more involved in decision-making and leadership in the Nigeria Navy.

These are those who joined the Navy through the general recruitment process and are also known as the “ranks and file” of the naval force.

4. Leading Rating
5. Able Rating
6. Ordinary Rating
7. Trainee

Non-commissioned officers don’t have badges.

Salary Structures

The Nigeria Navy are paid in terms of ranks and educational qualifications; this means the higher the level, the higher the salary. They also earn other stipends for hazards.
