The Nigeria Army has issued a strong warning to the famous Islamic cleric, Sheikh Gumi, and other ”opinionists”, to guard their utterances.
The Army issued the warning in a statement signed by Mohammed Yeriwa, Director, Army Public Relations.
The statement cautions the cleric, Gumi, on his recent statement, accusing the Nigeria Army Christian soldiers of killing the bandits. The Army said its troops are not deployed for religious or ethnic purposes; rather, they fight for national safety and security.
“While the Nigerian Army would not want to join issues with the respected Sheikh Ahmed Gumi, it is, however, important to restate that the Nigerian Army as a national institution does not deploy its troops along ethnic or religious lines.
“Therefore, Sheikh Ahmed Gumi and other opinion merchants are please enjoined to exercise restraint not to drag the image and reputation of one of the most reliable national institutions to disrepute,” the statement partly reads.
A video clip was seen where the cleric “was seen telling bandits that soldiers involved in attacks against them were non-Muslims. Gumi further stated that they should be aware that soldiers are divided into Muslims and non-Muslims.”
