Nigeria’s economy is heading in the right direction but slow – UN

Nigeria’s economy is moving in the right direction, but the motion is slow, United Nations asserts.

Amina Mohammed, the Deputy Secretary-General of the United Nations, made this known in a meeting at the Federal Ministry of Industry, Trade, and Investment in Abuja.

She confirms that Nigeria’s challenges were big, mostly its large population but insists that the nation’s economy is doing great with lots of opportunities.

The United Nations designee stated that after her travel experience on various roads and trains in the Northern part of the country, she discovered that the roads were motorable, though some were still undergoing repairs.

Amina said, “This is a country that is diverse in nature, ethnicity, religious backgrounds, and opportunities. But these are its strengths, not weaknesses.

“And I think the narrative for Nigeria has to change to one that is very much the reality.”

On the trip she took across some part of the country, she said,

“What I saw along the way is really a country that is growing, that is moving in the right direction both economically. Is it fast enough? No. Is it in the right direction? Yes, it is.

“And the challenges still remain with security, our social cohesion, and the social contract between the government and the people. But I know that people are working on these issues.”

She confirms that the UN recognized the reforms on-going in the country and other nations, stating that the common global agenda was the Sustainable Development Goals.

Mohammed further commended Nigeria’s apt response to the COVID-19 pandemic, asserting that the arrival of the vaccines would be the beginning of the end of COVID-19.

She said, “You can rest assured that there will be many more pandemics, so we should be prepared with strong health systems to do so.

“We hope that the vaccines will become more available and equitable so that everyone gets it.”
